Spandau Ballet – Be Free With Your Love (UK 12″)

Posted by DjPaulT on April 6th, 2012

BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1989

“Be Free With Your Love” a great song with great lyrics. I thought it would be the perfect track for Good Friday and the Easter weekend. Enjoy!

After a hiatus from recording, during which Gary and Martin Kemp established themselves as credible actors in the gangster film The Krays, the band released Heart Like a Sky in September 1989.

The album was not widely released (not at all in the US) and was for the most part disregarded. It did, however, do well in Italy and Netherlands where the single “Be Free with Your Love” reached the Top 10. “Be Free With Your Love” peaked at #62 in the UK and #42 in Germany. Afterwards, Spandau Ballet, from whom Gary Kemp was already feeling estranged, split up.

I thought that Spandau always had the potential and looks to be as big as Duran Duran. Some of their later singles were pretty hard to find in ext. format. Paul do u also have the 12″ versions of How Many Lies and Fight For Ourselves? Thanks

Hi Omar yes I do have those 12″ singles and many others by Spandau. Someday I will get them posted 🙂

“How many lies” have 12″? I don’t think so.

Spandau Ballet always had the potential to be as big as Duran in the US, and they’ve always been stronger in the melody department. And they had Martin Kemp! 😛
They desperately wanted to make it big in the US and hence changed their New Romantic sound for a rockier one (Fight For Ourselves, Raw etc) but the move didn’t pay off and it even lost them the momentum in the UK.
Also, with the group split into two camps fighting for glory and credit, it’s really hard for the band to move forward.
Really a shame, because they could’ve achieved so much more.
As for this single, it’s another case of how an awesome remix can really lift a song up. Strauss rocks!
    But so do you, Paul!

Thank you Ric you always manage to bring a smile to my face with your comments. I really do appreciate you. I was always a Duranie first and Spandau second but they are one of my very favorites and so under rated.

    Hi Paul,
I have been away for about 2+ months, I am glad that you have been going on strong after the “Mega” debacle. Hope everything is going well with you and family and this continuous to be a rewarding experience for you. I am trying to catch several songs that I missed all this time and I thank you for ALL of them.
    Take care.

P.S. I have seen that you posted a couple of Rick Springfield’s 12″s… Is “State of the heart” programmed for sometime this year? : )

Thanks a lot, Paul! I have the CD-Single, but it only includes an edit of the remix, when there was room for so much more. To skip these 2 great Justin Strauss full length mixes was criminal!

    Keep it up!
