New Order – Shellshock (US 12″ Promo)
Posted by DjPaulT on April 11th, 2012
BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1986
“Shellshock” is a single released by British group New Order in March 1986. The song originally appeared on the soundtrack to the movie Pretty in Pink one month prior to its single release. Production is credited to New Order and John Robie, and is loosely inspired by the 1983 Robie-produced R&B club hit, “One More Shot” – a studio project where Robie performed under the band name, C-Bank, and featuring vocals by Jenny Burton.
The single had differing B-sides; in the UK the 7″ came with the recycled “Thieves Like Us Instrumental” which also turned up in the movie Pretty in Pink (although not on the soundtrack), while the US 12″ promo included a “Dub Mix”.
The 12″ boasts an extended remix of the song running nearly ten minutes, arguably New Order’s longest recording behind the original cut of “Elegia”. For the release of the popular singles compilation Substance, the original Pretty in Pink soundtrack version was not used, as is widely believed, but an edited version of the 12″ remix cut down to six and a half minutes omitting an entire verse of vocals. It is this version that appears most often on CD. As yet, the 9:41 single remix remains unavailable on CD, but the Pretty in Pink soundtrack version contains all of the original vocals. The cover artwork on the 12 inch single is by English photographer Geoff Power and is unique in that the typo ‘Alex’ on the front top cover was not added by Peter Saville, the designer.

As a NO fan, it’s such a shame that I didn’t know this version exist until now. (I’ve always thought the version in Substance is the same one as this.)

Shellshock is one of my favourite New Order singles (Subculture is my other), and this remix in its full glory is hot!
I think this version is recently out on some CD compilation…BUT it suffered the now-common fate of the Loudness treatment. Might as well consider it not out on digital then.
So your rip can’t come at a better time, Paul!
Thanks!

The 9:41 version has been released on CD in 2011 on the Blank & Jones 12 inch compilation series ‘so80s’ (volume 6). These German guys are trying to get a hold of rare 12 inch masters, and frankly said, they do a very well job. But sadly their compilations are suffering from much compression. Sometimes it’s just a wall of loud noise instead of natural dynamics. Very pity and totally unnecessary too.
Ben Liebrand/Sony (The Netherlands) is releasing volume 9 of his Grand 12 Inches series in a few weeks. He is known for gentle compression.

Thanks for the rip, Paul.
This version is on the So80s compilation, as others have stated, but it does not sound good at all.
So, thanks for taking the time to transfer both the vocal and dub version

Paul,
I just want to say…thank you FOR EVERYTHING you do on this site. It’s not taken for granted. You make many people happy…it’s not just having access to these otherwise lost gems, but in this troubled world, hearing these songs, for a brief moment, takes us back to a time in our youth or other special time. Sure, we have to wake up and get back to the grind and reality of it all, but who say’s it’s not healthy to bring such happiness to our lives via these memories that come from songs that you kindly share? Again, at least for me, I don’t feel I’m being overly dramatic, it’s what I feel, and I just wanted you to know that as you clean up the files, prepare the covers and write your comments while alone, in the middle of the night or day and you feel, is it all worth it? YES! You are making a difference it many lives. With sincere gratitude, I Thank you!

Thank you JC. It’s not dramatic so say what you feel I love that. Your comment is exactly why I started Burning The Ground in the first place. I love music and I love how it can bring us all together if only for a few minutes. Sometimes I do wonder if all of the countless hours spent on trying to make the best possible vinyl transfer is worth it. You my friend have answered my question. Most definitely it is

I remember not buying this on 12″ 2nd hand years back because of the Alex graffiti, thinking it had been done by the previous owner. Thanks for the U/L strangely i have three copies of Run2 but not Shellshock.
