The Dream Academy – The Love Parade (UK 12″)

Posted by DjPaulT on March 26th, 2012

BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1985

“The Love Parade” is the fourth single released by The Dream Academy. It was a more “edgy” song then their previous singles, with the theme being about adultery and erotic temptation. There were two additional singles released in the UK by Blanco y Negro, a 7″ shaped picture disc and a second limited edition release.

There were high hopes for the single, especially from Warner Brothers Records, and there was some degree of promotion of the song (such as a live performance on American Bandstand). However, the single failed to live up to the expectations of their debut single, “Life in a Northern Town”, just making the top 40 (#36) in the US but reaching #78 in the UK.

Thanks, Paul! I know it was too moody and retro to be very successful as a single in ’86, but the DA’s first album is still one of my all-time favorites and this is an extended version I don’t have. I suppose “Edge of Forever” was the only other really viable single candidate, so why they didn’t springboard it off of its use in Ferris Bueller will remain one of life’s tiny little mysteries…

Hi Jamieh sadlty “Edge Of Forever” only made to the promo stage and did not get a full release I think it could have been a hit.

Dear Paul. Another gem from you. This was one of DA’s best tracks and sounds even better on the rare US 7″ Mix. Do u have that one ?

Hi yes I do have it will try to add it as a bonus track when I do my next Dream Academy post.

I’ve got a friend that’s been trying to track down the U.S. 7″ for AGES! If you could post that as an addendum or on it’s own, that would be fan-freakin tactic. Apparently it’s completely different from the album/7″ UK mix. I’ve personally never heard it!!

HI DJ Paul..just wondering what the Batch1_Batch2 means?

    DjPaulT Reply:

Matracas doesn’t mean anything I just forgot to rename the tracks after resampling in iZotope. I am re-uploading the files with correct file names now you re-download or just simply rename the files.

I fixed the file names and re-uploaded the files. It’s all good now. Enjoy and apologize for the mess up 🙂

Woo! Another lush single from The Dream Academy. Thanks Paul!

However, I’ve always thought that this was the second single and follow-up to Life In A Northern Town. Can anyone else confirm?

And to extend on the adultery theme of this song, The Love Parade is actually a real life account on a love triangle that involved Nick Laird-Clowes. He was having an affair with a married woman. This song is about him sitting down and thinking that the whole situation is “just totally freaked”!

You’re welcome Ric. This is what Wikipedia shows as the bands first five singles:

    “Life in a Northern Town”
    “The Edge of Forever”
    “This World”
    “The Love Parade”
“Please, Please, Please Let Me Get What I Want”

I also thought “The Love Parade” was the group’s second single. I guess the two singles in between charted in other countries than the US. But thank you very much for this, Paul. This song is grossly overlooked on 80’s compilations and deserves some attention.

    DjPaulT Reply:

You’re welcome Dan. The two singles in between were both released in the US but as promo’s only.

Hi Paul! I have a request – do you think you could do a rip of Typical Male by Tina Turner? I can’t find a good version of that 12″ anywhere. I’d love it! Thanks!

This is really cool. Do you have the double 7″ of this single? I really would like to hear the cover of “Things We Said Today.”
