Boys Don’t Cry – Cities On Fire (US 12″)

Posted by DjPaulT on January 12th, 2012

BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1986

Boys Don’t Cry are a British new wave band known for the hit single “I Wanna Be a Cowboy” released in 1986.

The follow-up single to “I Wanna Be a Cowboy” was (necessarily perhaps) a complete departure; “Cities On Fire”, an energetic rush of synth-rock which was released in 7″ and 12″ remix form, received early attention from MTV but failed to connect with fans of the novelty hit and didn’t receive enough airplay to create a new fanbase.

Anyone know if the “US Mix” is the same as the version on the US LP from which it comes from.

    DjPaulT Reply:

Jon the LP version is 5:11 and I don’t think it’s mixed by Shep Pettibone so I doubt if it’s the same version. There is also a UK Mix that is 5:40.

So funny, absolutely no-one in the UK has heard of these guys (I actually assumed they were American till I just read Wiki).

I don’t think I Wanna Be A Cowboy even made the Top 40?

While it was a Top 20 winner in the US, I Wanna Be A Cowboy didn’t even make the UK Top 75, limping miserably at #77. Shame, as I thought the Brits would get their kitsch and camp even more!

Paul, thanks for more excellent New Wave for the week!
I only have I Wanna Be A Cowboy so thanks for this follow-up.
