Maria Vidal – Body Rock (US 12″)

Posted by DjPaulT on December 15th, 2011

Maria Vidal (born August 1, 1957) is an American singer, who had one minor hit single with the song, “Body Rock” (#48 on the Hot 100) (the theme song to the film Body Rock) in 1984; it also reached #8 on the US dance charts, and #11 in the UK. The track was produced by Phil Ramone and remixed by John “Jellybean Benitez.

Vidal was originally a member of the band, Desmond Child & Rouge, but went solo with a self-titled debut album released in 1987.

Vidal contributed backup vocals to the The Smithereens’ 1984 single “A Girl Like You”. She also appeared in the 1985 Jim Carrey film, Once Bitten, as a member of a high school band and contributed two songs to the soundtrack.

Maria sang backing vocals for Lindsay Buckingham and company, as well as various works with KISS. Buckingham co-wrote “Life on the Train”, which is on her 1987 LP. Vidal also wrote the 1989 Belinda Carlisle hit “Summer Rain”.

Vidal is married to music producer and songwriter Rick Nowels.

Yikes – one of my all-time favourite Hi-NRG tracks!
Sometimes a bad movie can spawn a Hi-NRG classic… Irene Cara’s “The Dream” (from DC Cab) and Rainey’s “I Can Fly” (from Girls Just Wanna Have Fun) to name a couple.
This post is very much appreciated, will have to go to my Paypal account and send you a little something 🙂

Guss glad that you like this one it’s up there as one of my all-time favorite Hi-NRG tracks too! I also appreciate the donation very much. Happy holidays to you my friend.

I want to take a moment to wish you a (politically incorrect) Merry Christmas! You, with your music, lift my spirits several times this year. I hope Santa brings you a lot of vinyl and everything else you want or need. Sincerely. Ricki.
P.S. Body Rock is one of those songs I search through the years trying to find a good sounding one, I am sure that the search is over (downloading as I write).

Merry Christmas to you Ricki. I am very happy that I have been able to lift your spirits that is what this blog is all about. Thank you for being a devoted reader.

    Ricki Reply:

That crescendo in the beginning of the song before she starts singing gives me goosebumps. I don’t know why… and it just did (must be a hormonal thing )

I have this 12″ single, but like Ricki, have been searching for a good sounding rip, and as Survivor sang…”The Search Is Over”. Thanks, Paul!

The unique thing about this record and also Dan Hartman’s I Can Dream About You is that both songs charted the UK Top 20 more than one year after their US release. Both singles peaked in September of 1985 (Body Rock hit #11, I Can Dream About You hit #12). I think the revival have something to do with TV or cable screening both those B-movies, Body Rock and Streets Of Fire.

I have always wanted to see both of these movies but have not had the chance yet. Someday I will track them down. Interesting chart facts Ric. It’s almost happy weekend time 🙂

Fabbo! All the years I’ve been visiting Burning The Ground I never once spotted Maria Vidal in the list to the left! Can’t believe it 🙂
Body Rock is a teenage favourite for me. It sounds so cute hearing it now 🙂
The same thing happened with your two Marilyn posts which I’ve now downloaded.
    Thank you from Australia 🙂
