Bananarama – Cruel Summer (UK 12″)

Posted by DjPaulT on December 3rd, 2011

BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1983

“Cruel Summer” is a pop song originally written and performed by Bananarama that was a top ten hit in Britain in 1983. Singer Sara Dallin said the song “played on the darker side (of summer songs): it looked at the oppressive heat, the misery of wanting to be with someone as the summer ticked by. We’ve all been there!”

“Cruel Summer” was not an immediate international success when it was released. Although it hit #8 on the UK Chart, its international popularity soared after its inclusion in the 1984 feature film The Karate Kid; this was a year after the song’s original release (the song was released in 1984 in the US). The group did not allow the song to be included in the film’s soundtrack, but regardless it was their first top ten hit (#9) in the USA. When Bananarama were still struggling to make money in their early years, they even performed the song at a beauty contest in Hawaii.

The music video was shot in New York City and features a take on the American TV show The Dukes of Hazzard, with a bumbling cop duo who chase the girls as they make their escape in a truck (at one point, Bananarama members throw bananas at a trailing police cruiser).

Great tune… and great to see this in 24 bit!

As always, your efforts are greatly appreciated. Really like the new logo at the top of the page, too… simpler, but VERY effective. Looks professional!

I noticed Paul. I actually enjoy guessing the underlying artwork, this one being Michael Jackson’s Off The Wall, if I’m not mistaken.

Paul, we are going bananas over this Rama series Part 1!
The smiling continues from the girls on the single sleeve, but the irony (like you mentioned), is that while the song may be upbeat, the sentiments are far from it.
I wonder if Cruel Summer would’ve cracked Top 5 had the girls allowed it to be included in the Karate Kid soundtrack. (George Michael’s refusal to Top Gun led to A Different Corner only stalling at #7.)
When Bananarama allowed I Heard A Rumour to be used in The Disorderlies soundtrack in 1987, it hit #2 in Canada and #4 in the US, way higher than the #14 peak in their native UK.
So seems like besides a cover version, a movie song is another way to go to garner that hit!

Karate Kid was huge so yes I think it would have certainly helped. If I remember correctly Beverly Hills Cop II soundtrack really gave George Michael a boost with “I Want Your Sex”.

    ric Reply:

For sure, and that’s because George has learnt his lesson from Top Gun. He had indirectly given Berlin their monster smash with Take My Breath Away. A Different Corner was supposed to be the Love Theme from that movie, but George oh-so-wisely refused them.

In case you guys didn’t already know, the A-side of this 12″ is the longer “Disco Mix” of “Cruel Summer”. It’s just like an extended version of the original album version. It’s actually quite hard to find, but it has recently popped up on some CDs in the past few years. I’ll be checking it out in 96/24 though! Totally loving this blog. Thank you, Paul!
