New Order – True Faith (Australian 12″)

BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1987

“True Faith” is a 1987 track from New Order, produced by Stephen Hague. It was the first New Order single since their debut “Ceremony” to be issued in the UK as two separate 12″ singles. The second 12″ single features two remixes of “True Faith” by Shep Pettibone. The single peaked at number four in the United Kingdom on its original release in 1987. The single also became the first New Order single to chart on the Hot 100 in the United States that same year and their first ever Top 40 hit, peaking at number 32.

As is the case for many New Order songs, the words in the title do not appear anywhere in the lyrics. The original lyrics included a verse that read “Now that we’ve grown up together/They’re taking drugs with me”. Hague convinced Sumner to change the latter line to “They’re afraid of what they see” because he was worried that otherwise it would not get played on the radio. When performing the song live, the band have always used the original line.

“True Faith” was used in the opening nightclub scene in Mary Harron’s film adaptation of Bret Easton Ellis’s novel American Psycho and in James Bridges’s 1988 film adaptation of Jay McInerney’s novel Bright Lights, Big City. It also appears at the end of the 14th episode of the third season of the American TV series Queer as Folk and in the season finale of the first season of the series The Vampire Diaries.

The US and UK 7″ and 12″ singles contain the song “1963” as the b-side, however the Australian 12″ contains a remix of “Paradise” from the album Brotherhood.

Now that I changes the playback on my sound card to 24/96 I can hear a major difference on the 24bit flac files (The three that are posted to this site now)I can hear that “air” that I was missing with 16 bit. It’s like so much accurate than before. I know every 12″ Maxi Single will sound different, however if this is taste of what is to come…bring it on. On another note love the 600dpi scans in .png Yes, Yes, Yes,

Very cool, glad to see you are doing Hi-Rez now too. Great job, appreciate all the effort you put into the rips.

If you’d like, I know of some places you might be interested in where you can find many Hi quality Hi Rez vinyl rips and friendly rippers who you can bounce ideas off of that are glad to help out a fellow ripper.

Like I see you use Adobe to resample where you may get better results using Izoptope RX advance 2 on the default settings. Seems to be the go to program for other rippers.

Thanks again for the great rips.

    DjPaulT Reply:

Thank you for your comment I am getting ready to start using iZotope RX Advanced 2 for the downsampling process we will see how it works.

You never cease to amaze, Paul! In my case it’s the Dub that I appreciate the most, and also learning about the lyric change. OK, so it’s up there on Wikipedia, but otherwise I wouldn’t have thought about checking it up.

    Thanks a lot!!!

Have the UK 12″ and didn’t realize there is a different B-side for this Aussie release!
Surely one of New Order’s signature tunes (Pet Shop Boys and George Michael loved it), and possibly the Best Video for 1987!
    Thanks Paul!

I have the New Order Box Set “Retro” (5 Disc) and it lists the ‘Paradise” remix as “Paradise [Robert Racic Mix] – New Order (1987)” in case anyone wanted to know what I found. Thanks Paul for this great sounding vinyl rip. For me, sometimes it’s not just the remixes or single edits that excite me, it’s also the sound of Vinyl. I consider the sound of Vinyl to be better than any other source.
