Peter Brown – They Only Come Out At Night (US 12″)

Posted by DjPaulT on October 26th, 2011

They Only Come Out at Night is 1984 dance single by Peter Brown. The single was his first number one on the dance chart for one week. The single also peaked at number fifty on the soul singles chart, but unlike previous Peter Brown entries, “They Only Come Out at Night”, did not make the Hot 100. The single was taken from Peter’s fourth and final album Snap.

In the late 1980s a severe case of Tinnitus prompted Peter to quit the music business in an attempt to preserve his damaged hearing. He began a design company which headed the award-winning redesign of the Chicago Board Options Exchange Internet site, among other wide ranging design and architectural projects.

Today, Peter continues an entrepreneurial life from his home in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado.

    Thanks for this rip, Paul!
2 (They Only Come Out At Night and Love Is Just The Game) and a half (Zie Zie Won’t Dance) great singles from the Snap album that didn’t do much outside of the Club Play chart.
Again goes to show just how tough the mid-80s were to even crack the Hot 100.
I wonder how these 80s misses would perform if there had already been the internet…

I think that theses songs may have gotten a wider audience if the internet had been around because of social media and so forth, but I think some of it also has to do with record companies and radio promoting the artist. I don’t really understand why this song didn’t do better, personally I love it. I hope more people will chime in and share their thoughts. It always bothers me a bit to see a post that is this great not get many comments.

I’m sure all record companies want their artists to do well, so probably radio and later MTV had a lot to do with making or breaking a hit.
Especially in countries outside of the US, we get even more limited in terms of exposure back in the 70s and 80s, and were at the “mercy” of our local radio stations.
Those of us who hunt down vinyls or tapes at record stores would have that extra outlet.

The most interesting fact about this artist is that after his career had seemingly run its course, Madonna recorded “Material Girl”, which he co-wrote. Even without a career before that he’d be set for life.

  3. Maggi M Says:

    Love this stuff
All those singles were played in clubs in Iceland (Love, They only and Zie Zie)
Wish they would have released Snap on CD.
Do you have Zie Zie also Paul?

  4. Kenneth Says:

There is a Hot Tracks Remix of this song. I heard it on Discogs the other day. Check it out!

Great Jellybean mix 🙂 Thank you, Paul!

One of my favorite dance artist of all time. Sadly it’s impossible to get some of even his hit singles on CD. I only remember him being on TK then RCA then Columbia. But it rather complicates things. It’s great to hear any of his work. Thank You Great Post!

    Rolls B. Goode Reply:

and by hit singles you know I always mean 12″ maxi singles.

I’m so glad you posted this! I was looking for a good quality scan of the artwork and I saw you’d ripped it. I have the 12″ but your prowess at digitizing vinyl is far greater than mine so it’s fantastic to have something high quality. Thank you!
