Olivia Newton-John & ELO – Xanadu (German 12″)
Posted by DjPaulT on September 26th, 2011
BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1980
Happy Birthday Olivia!
“Xanadu” is the title song from the album Xanadu, the soundtrack to the 1980 film of the same name.
The song is performed by the Electric Light Orchestra and Olivia Newton-John. Newton-John sings the primary vocals, with ELO adding “parenthetic” vocals in the style of their other songs on the “Xanadu” soundtrack, along with providing the instrumentation. A rare collaboration for ELO, the single reached no.1 in several countries and was the band’s only UK #1 single when it peaked there for two weeks in July 1980. The song peaked at #8 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the US.

Wonderful!!!!!!
You keep the best for your third Olivia’s post.
One of my all time favorite song, and in a great version.
Please Paul what is the story of this disco version? Is it an official mix??
As you didn’t put the usual discogs link I wasn’t able to check this…
Whatever Thanks Thanks Thanks and Thanks!!!
It’s a great way to celebrate the diva’s birthday and it’s a gorgeous present you bring to us.

The mix is official and it only appeared on this 12″ and on a Japanese 12″ promo as far as i know. The first half is ELO’s “Drum Dreams” which was excluded from the soundtrack. This mix is extremely rare. Not sure if this 12″ was a mispress or what but most of the singles only had the standard single version.

WOW! WOW! WOW!
And I thought only Magic had an extended version!
This is such a treat for all Olivia’s fans on her Birthday! Thank you Paul!
Olivia was HUGE for me in 1980, as both this and Magic are in my Top 10 for the year.
Strange though that the release for Magic and Xanadu were flip-flopped in the UK and the US in 1980, with Magic becoming the huge #1 in the US and this being the #1 in the UK.
A win-win situation?

Ric I did not know that there was an extended version of “Magic” I have never heard or seen it. Do you have details?

Actually I believe it was fan-made bootleg. I have never seen an official vinyl release of it in the 80s or heard of it til now. I do have the extended version, as well as the others i.e. “A Little More Love,” “Move A Move On Me,” etc, and they were just extended mixes, not remixes! These mixes kept to their originalities… whoever made them are genius master deejays!!! Thank U!

My bad!
Thanks Denny for clearing that up…as you’ve mentioned, the mix was very straight forward and kept to the original, so I’ve assumed it was official, just like the A Little More Love one.
Paul has posted the 12″ for Physical, so what about Heart Attack? Is there a 12″ version for that?

Hey Ric there was a 12″ for “Heart Attack” released in Japan as a promo. Unfortunately it was not a remix or extended version, just the single version

Thank u for this fabulous version!!! I’ve been looking for this mix for a long time ever since I heard in 1980 overseas. Actually the ELO’s “Drum Dreams” did appear on the B-side of ELO’s “I’m Alive” 45RPM single in the states. I have a copy of the 7″ record and the cover slip is in blue colour “Xanadu” design.
Also recently about 2 years I downloaded (or discovered) a mp3 version of the unreleased original full movie music soundtrack from “Xanadu” (all complete instrumentals including incidental and background music). Here’s trackisting…
1. Xanadu overture
2. Sonny’s dream
3. Kira kisses Sonny
4. The girl on the album cover
5. Record store music
6. Danny’s clarinet
7. Sonny chases after Kira
8. The buidling Sonny meets Kira
9. Source music
10. Danny’s Glenn Miller record
11. Kira’s suggestion
12. Kira and Sonny
13. Danny meets Kira
14. Musical interlude
15. Love you forever
16. Meeting Kira’s parents
17. Nine sisters’ tap dance (This is my favorite, the one before “Fool country”)
18. End cast
20. Xanadu end credit-reprise
Anyone interested? Cheers!

And yes, all original compositions here by Barry DeVorzon, except the last 3 tracks by ELO. Cheers!

I already have the “Drum Dreams” 7″ and the mp3 soundtrack that you mentioned with the score instrumentals, incidental and background music which is a fan made bootleg.

Bootleg or not, true Xanadu-fanatics will enjoy the memories of this ill-fated movie, which was supposed to be ONJ’s first vehicle movie! Wish her well…

Never knew that there was a disco mix of Xanadu. Xanadu is one of my alltime favourite song by Oliva Newton-John. I’m very surprised. I have the Maxi Single of Xanadu myself, but curiously, on the A-side there is only the album version with a duration of 3 minutes 32 seconds. The maxi single was printed in Holland. The front and back cover is identical with your scans.
I also have the single “I’m alive” from ELO with the b-sided “drums dreams”. This single was also printed in Holland. But my vinyl is much used, so it’s great to have a high quality mp3 of “drums dreams” that you share.
However, thank you DJ PaulT for celebrating Olivia’s birthday with this gem. I really appreciate your commitment to great music.

Just rediscovered my Maxi Single Magic by Olivia Newton-John. I’m not quite sure if this is an extended version: the duration is 4 minutes 25 seconds. Maybe this is the album version. The vinyl was manufactured in Holland and is in a quite very good shape (also the cover). Label: Jet Records 12.196 (CB 241).
Is there a genuine exteded version? I would like to know that!

Yes, there really is an extended version, it clock in at 6:09 minutes. But it’s nothing to get all excited about, I did edits like that in the 70s, with the pause button on my tape deck

Ah, thank you so much, Paul! Once again you surprised us. At this time with this Olivia’s & ELO single. I was in my bad yesterday when you posted this (I think that we have a huge difference in time) so I’m not the first here who tell “thanks” to you, but take one more again please. Simply the best Birthday present to all Livvy’s true fans! Excellent work really!
I did know about this single, yes, but I never heard this Disco Mix of “Xanadu”. And what about b-side “Fool Country”? – I already have it on 2CD Set “Gold” from Hip-O which was released in 2005. But now, when we have it as “vinyl-rip” it’s more expensive!
