Used the new needle on this one just curious if anyone noticed a difference?

I cannot tell a difference between this rip and the Foreigner rips from last week. They all sound really good to me. I’ve never had any complaints. But it’s hard to compare different types of music for sound quality. Foreigner and Swing Out Sister are nothing alike, so maybe it wasn’t a good comparison test. Maybe if you ripped the same song with each needle we could tell a difference. This SOS rip is extremely clean though, I can say that. Are you noticing a big difference, Paul?

    DjPaulT Reply:

Thank you for replying Woz. I feel like I can tell a difference or it may just be in my head, but things sound a bit more brilliant. I got an email from someone today saying that my rips sound muffled like I use too much noise reduction (which I don’t use any) so that is what started this (lol). I am very critical of my work so any time I get feedback like that it starts my mind wondering.

    Brilliant post, Paul!
I am a HUGE SOS fan, and the Popstand Mix is my favourite. But then again, I love all those Popstand Mixes.
Will give you my feedback once I listen to this, but I know where Woz is coming from. Different pressings and different genres make it not an easy comparison.
And also your previous benchmark is already set very high, so we won’t be expecting any marked difference.
But I hope I can tell some difference.

Hi Paul, managed to listen to your “new needle” rips.
It sounds “brighter” to me. Love the crisp clear sound!
I can sort of understand about the email you received regarding the rips being “muffled”.
It is not unclean, unclear or distorted per say, but I observe that with some rips, it’s as if a thin veil has been placed over the singer’s microphone. Does that make sense?
All that being said, these could’ve all been due to the original vinyl pressings (like what Woz said).
And also, remember we are simply nit-picking here. The standard you have set right from the start is already so up there!
For sure we can tell more about the upgrade of your new needles with more posts in the future. I’m sure many here will be more than willing to give you more feedback.

I think it’s possible that some people forget how much the quality of the pressing and the vinyl itself play a part in the outcome of a vinyl rip. Not to mention the production and mastering on these 80s records is not always as clean as we would like to think it was. If they don’t like what they hear, it may be easier for some to just assume that the rip is bad. I have plenty of records that I wish sounded better, but that’s part of the vinyl game.

You can’t please everyone, Paul. Obviously you should listen to any constructive criticism, but don’t forget that the overwhelming majority of us are very happy with the sound quality of your rips. I have a decent stereo system and I can turn these rips up to 11 and the sound is intensely pleasing.

Woz thank you for your comment. You are completely correct about pressing quality and so forth. I reaally appreciate your feedback.

Paul, can you say what kind of EQ settings you use during the recording process or is it a flat transfer? I know you have said that you don’t post-process either, so that is something people should keep in mind. If it is a flat transfer from vinyl, then as long as good equipment is used to record with (which Paul does) the result will be a 1:1 copy of the vinyl. Then if you want to make it ‘pop’ you should adjust your equalizer settings for playback. This is my own philosophy – I’m sure not everyone would agree – but it makes fair sense in my little world.

Anyway, if you don’t mind sometime, Paul, could you give us an overview of the settings you use during recording and if you do any cleanup afterwards? I find this stuff interesting.

    DjPaulT Reply:

Hi Woz I DO NOT use any EQ settings noise reduction etc, during the recording process it is just a straight 1:1 transfer the only thing I use is ClickRepair at a ver light setting of 3 with DeCrackle turned off. Then I manually remove leftover clicks/pops. The only other thing that I do is normalize if necessary and I always avoid clipping. I always record in 32bit float and save as 24/96 for myself and down sample to 16/44 for the blog. I do this using Adobe Audition. Then encode to flac and mp3.

Paul! Thank you so so much! You made my week with this post! The Pop Stand Remix is amazing and only available on vinyl, as is the rare 7″ version. Love them both. Thank you so much for this gem. SOS is one of my favorite groups of all time and they put out some great singles in the 80s and 90s. Twilight World is another favorite. :-)

Hi Paul, any chance to post these 1986 US Bruce Forest mixes of ‘Twilight World’ in the near future? ‘Twilight World’ is one of my favorite songs by Swing Out Sister and the Bruce Forest mixes are totally unknown to me. Extremely rare and difficult to find, can’t find them anywhere, not even on Youtube. If I’m correctly informed, the track listing of this promo 12″ is:
    1. Vocal Dub 4.52
    2. Classical Dub 4.59
    3. Instrumental Dub 6.33
    4. Beat Your Sister Dub 3.03
