Grace Jones – Pull Up To The Bumper (Remix) (UK 12″)

Posted by DjPaulT on May 21st, 2011

BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1985

“Pull Up to the Bumper” was the second single released by Grace Jones from her critically-acclaimed 1981 album Nightclubbing. The song has since come to be one of Jones’ signature tunes. The song was co-written by Jones herself, Sly Dunbar, Dana Mano and Robbie Shakespeare.

Upon its release, “Pull Up to the Bumper” spent seven weeks at number 2 on the U.S. Billboard Hot Dance Club Play chart, as well as becoming a Top-5 single on the U.S. R&B chart.

Over the years, “Pull Up to the Bumper” has been remixed several times. In 1985 the track was again remixed and re-released to promote the Island Life compilation, and was released in two different 12″ mixes, one an extended remix with additional keyboard overdubs and remix by Paul “Groucho” Smykle, and another an edited remix version which can be found on the rare 12″ entitled “Musclemix”. This 1985 remix peaked at #12 on the UK pop chart in early 1986.

The song sparked some controversy upon it’s original 1981 release for its suggestive lyrics, as they figuratively describe sexual intercourse. Among the lines are “Pull up to my bumper baby / In your long black limousine / Pull up to my bumper baby / Drive it in between”, and “Grease it / Spray it / Let me lubricate it”.

Am I missing a subtlety or is this mix the same one that was on the b-side of “Musclemix”? (Not that I’m not grateful for Paul sharing everything but just making sure I’m not overlooking something between the two versions.)

Maybe I wasn;t very observant but for some reason the entire time I was ripping this one i was thinking that it was a different mix. But now after listening again I do think they are the same however I think this rip turned out better. But looking on the positive side the artwork itself is worth the download.

Paul is in such a GraceFULL mood lately eh? LOL
To add on to it’s 1981 chart performance.
The single ended 1981 as the #35 R&B Single and #17 Hot Dance Club Play Single.
And notice how there isn’t a single weak link on this 12″ single? Every track is worthy of an A-Side credit!

Thanks again, Paul! I agree: the artwork alone was worth the trouble!

If you have them, another Grace Jones long-lost treasure would be the 12″ of “That’s The Trouble” and “Sorry,” never released on CD.

  9. Disco D Says:

Thanks Paul. It is indeed the same mix. But, as this is spread acorss one side of a 12in single, the sound quality will be a lot better. Mastering engineers have to compress, cut bass and treble to squeeze more tracks on one side of a 12in vinyl.

I love Paul “Groucho” Smykle mixes. He had great style back in 1980′s.
The original Extended Mix & Party Mix (b-side) was mixed by Steven Stanley.
There was also a Disconet Edit that was popular amongst DJ’s at the time too.
Contrary to myth, there was never a Larry Levan Mix. I asked him myself when he came to London (to play at Ministry of Sound) in late 1991 – a year before he died. He did say he loved the track and used to play the original, dub AND the Groucho 1986 mix.
