Platinum Blonde – Crying Over You (Canada 12″)

Posted by DjPaulT on April 6th, 2011

BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1985

REQUEST

Platinum Blonde was a Canadian New Wave group in the 1980s. The band originally consisted of Mark Holmes from Manchester, England on vocals and bass, Sergio Galli on guitar and Chris Steffler on drums. Scottish musician Kenny MacLean later joined the group. The name of the band was inspired by the 1931 Jean Harlow movie Platinum Blonde. They were known also for their stylish glam rock-like appearance dressing in pastel colour outfits and their music videos. Platinum Blonde was inducted into the Canadian Music and Broadcast Industry Hall of Fame on March 12, 2010.

In 1985, the band released a second album called Alien Shores, featuring the addition of a fourth member, Kenny MacLean. “Crying Over You” was the first single released from the album and features a guitar solo from Alex Lifeson from Rush. The song peaked at #2 on the Canadian Singles Chart in 1985. The ultra rare 12″ single features remixes by Shep Pettibone.

Thank you soooo much for this. Been looking for this for years! I even played drums for the band between 99 and 2001 and couldn’t even get it from Mark Holmes so a huge cheers! Hope you have some more Blonde in the future!

You’d think Sony Music Canada would wise up at some point and release some of this “never been on CD” material. I’ve grown really weary of trawling the internet only to not find any of the more obscure mixes.

Thanks Paul. I remember seeing them in Halifax, Nova Scotia in the 80s but never bought any of their records so it is nice to have this.

DJ Paul T, as much as I love your Culture Club, Dead Or Alive, Duran Duran and Sheena Easton posts, THIS post might be my favourite!

PB was one of my all-time favorites. When Alien Shores came out, they had really exploded everywhere. I went to high school with the guy who plays the bodyguard in the Crying Over You Video.

I saw them live at Maple Leaf Gardens with Michael Damien as the opener! Yikes!

These days Mark is still living in Toronto ( I think ) and is a co-owner of the Vespa shop on Queen Street West.

Still… that alien shores look was EVERYWHERE. “Stitches” anyone?

    AWESOME! AWESOME! AWESOME!

Platinum Blonde are one of my fave acts from my youth. Having grown up in Canada they were our very own Duran Duran (without the longevity as they pretty much imploded after “Contact”). H

However, finding ANY remixes online is like pulling teeth, so this is probably THE most welcome addition to your site for me (unless you have any other PB 12″s like “Contact”, “Fire”, “Take it From Me”, etc.)

Thank you again Paul for proving why your site is invaluable to anyone who had ANY interest in music from the 80s.

Yet another “unknown” track for me…and I luv it!!!!!!! It’s just been played 4 times over and over! Thanks for another awesome post! Great mixing again by Shep Pettibone, especially the breakdown near the end. Billiant!!!
I agree with Richard, burningtheground is invaluable to fans of 80′s music – “Proper music”!
    Thanks again :)
