Donna Summer – Love Is In Control (Finger On The Trigger) (US 12″)

Posted by DjPaulT on April 14th, 2011

“Love Is in Control (Finger on the Trigger)” is a hit single from Donna Summer’s self-titled 1982 album.

Summer’s 1980 The Wanderer album – the inaugural release on Geffen Records – had been certified gold in America although it did not enjoy numerous hit singles as some of her ’70s releases had enjoyed. Summer had prepped her next album, I’m a Rainbow – a double set which continued her association with Giorgio Moroder and Pete Bellotte , but David Geffen, compelled by the need for what he considered a guaranteed smash, had shelved I’m a Rainbow and assigned Summer to record an album with producer Quincy Jones. Jones was a much sought-after producer at the time, particularly due to his association with Michael Jackson’s Off The Wall album.

“Love Is In Control (Finger On the Trigger)” was the lead single off the Jones’ produced album Donna Summer. It was written by Jones and Rod Temperton – who’d also written Jackson’s “Rock with You”. Summer reports that the recording process for this album was challenging, as she was pregnant at the time and unhappy over I’m a Rainbow’ being shelved by Geffen Records.

The single was issued in three different versions: the 7″ single release (3:42), the LP version (4:19), and a 12″ single version (7:04). The 12″ version features an instrumental saxophone by Ernie Watts on the B-side.

“Love Is in Control (Finger On the Trigger)” became a major hit, peaking at #10 on the US Hot 100 in the summer of 1982, giving Summer her sixteenth top 40 hit, and reaching #4 on the US R&B Chart. It was Summer’s best R&B showing since “Bad Girls” in 1979 — even using police whistles in the song as in Bad Girls. Although the parent album was certified gold in the US, it did not produce any more major hits and did not prove the powerhouse album Geffen Records had hoped for.

Ironically, Summer would have her biggest success in the 1980s while on Geffen’s roster with her next album She Works Hard for the Money and its title cut – which were released by Mercury Records in a one-off arrangement to settle Summer’s split with the soon-to-be-defunct Casablanca Records, whose catalogue now resided with Mercury and Casablanca’s parent company Polygram Records.

Thanks for this DJPaul. I actually have this LP because; although I like this song, I really, really like “State of independence” (with the all star choir). In the cbox I have left you a few requests..but I hope you can get to “(I know) I’m losing you” by Uptown. Also: I have a few 12″ that I se in your want list on discogs…I’ll see if I can send them to you.

Wasn’t “Unconditional Love” a hit from the same album? I remember the music video being played quite a lot when I was a kid. Maybe my memory is clouded, who knows? I prefer this album to “I’m a Rainbow”. I’m glad they finally released it, but I can see why they shelved it.

  3. Joseph Says:

OOppsss…wrong album. UL was from She Works Hard… my bad.

  4. Spring Says:

Thank you very much dear Pault for this single in all its glory!

hi paul, i tried to open the mp3 folder but it was empty? i love this song and album…the 7″ version has a wonderful b-side “sometimes like butterflies” a beautiful non-lp ballad…i wish there was a deluxe edition cd of this album with remixes, b-sides, etc…i’m sure there are a bunch of unreleased gems by donna out there waiting for all of us die hard fans!! please let me know about the folder…thanks, rick 🙂

    Hi Paul!
This is a well deserved Top 10 for Donna, and I thought State Of Independence (with the all star choir) should’ve done as well. The Woman In Me is a gem, but too understated for pop success.
Apologies for an abrupt change of topic, but if you have them in your collection, can I make a request for a double Tracey Ullman post? This time is not for her 12″, but rather the 10″s for both Breakaway and They Don’t Know, which include different exclusive extended mixes of the 12″s. So excited to discover them!

Didn’t anyone else notice that the Charts section has the Swept away info instead of the Donna Summer info.?

    Hey Gimpy,

Are you sure you are using the password when extracting the file? The files are there. The folder would be empty if you aren’t using the password. The folder would extract but none of the files.

  11. Matracas Says:

@DjPaulT – Just another find; you modified the song title but have the wrong year…

  12. Ryan Clark Says:

Thank you for this great dance tune!
My favourite from this album is slow tempo “Lush Life”, and “Protection” by Bruce Springsteen.

  14. Jon Says:

I’ve been waiting for many years for a good clear copy of this 12’….thanks so much…any chance of recording 12″ of “Eyes” and “Supernatural Love”?

  15. gimpyforever Says:

Another great post Paul.I was 8 when this came out in the uk, my older sisters DJ boyfriend at the time did me a tape of this and a few other choice 12″ singles. Still have the tape but great to listen to your Flac version 19 years on. Thank You 🙂

  17. Adam Says:

Wasn’t this the same year that another Q production went on to be the biggest selling lp ever?
I honestly thought this was an amazing album that handled ‘better’ could have & should have sold as much as ‘thriller’.
Also im sure donnas older stuff still sells – otherwise it wouldnt be available- no?
what annoys me is the number of real no-hopers ‘n’ has-beens who get the ”deluxe double CD treatment”
Extra tracks??? – with Donna it seems its hard enough to buy the tracks We [the fans] want
    It makes no sense
    But that’s record companies 4 U. XX

  18. Jason63 Says:

Thank you Paul. I didn’t have this one either.

  19. Luludarling Says:

Thank you dear for all of your hard work getting this music to us!!!
