D&M – On The Shelf (US 12″ Promo)
Posted by DjPaulT on March 13th, 2011
BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1978
Pure pop-disco heaven! from D & M a.k.a. Donny and Marie Osmond. The song is notable in their career for being the final tune by ANY of the Osmonds in the ’70s to make the Billboard Pop Charts (# 38 in 1978). Donny went on to make a notable pop chart comeback in 1989-90, with sis Marie enjoying a country chart comeback of her own in the mid-80s. “On The Shelf” is from the 1978 film “Goin’ Coconuts”.
Though the film flopped, and essentially killed off any film career hopes for Donny & Marie, who were (at the time) enjoying a wildly successful run on television with their 1976-79 variety show. At the same time Marie was offered the lead role of Sandy in the 1978 blockbuster film “Grease” but she turned it down dut to the tart yourself up, to win the guy role in the films finale. “No” to Grease, but “Yes” to Goin’ Coconuts.
This rare 1978 Polydor promotion Disco 12″ contains the same track on both sides.

Goin’ Coconuts is from 1978? WOW, that movie didn’t make the Mexican movie theatres till the summer of 1980..and it was flop year also.
I remember the D&M(and all Osmond) records being issued on MGM Records so it’s weird to see this one on Polydor. Maybe it was because of the movie.

OMG! another strike off my want list!
Don’t think that your attentiveness and thoughfulness went unnoticed. *Wink!* Thanks Paul!
My sister was the one crazy over D&M, and bought their vinyls, and brought me to watch that movie!
I love love love this song. No doubt a catchy disco groove, but the lyrics are so so sad…
I think there lies the power of classic Gay Disco/Hi-NRG anthems. That juxtaposition that seems to work.

I just discovered your site today and have been having a great time rediscovering some old favorites. This one I have on the original vinyl LP, but not the extended version so thanks so much!
In response to Matracas’ post above, here in the U.S. Polydor took over MGM around 1976, so you will find Osmond releases (and other MGM artists) on that label.

This extended version of “On the Shelf” was recently issued on CD for the first time on the UK release “The Singles Collection” by Donny & Marie. The B side of the original 7 inch CD “Certified Honey” is also included on this CD.
