BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1985

With OBI strip

“The Goonies ‘R’ Good Enough” was a single released by singer Cyndi Lauper for The Goonies, a 1985 film which was released at the same time as this single.

Before its inclusion on The Essential Cyndi Lauper in 2003, the song was considered a rarity among fans, having never appeared on any of Lauper’s albums or the 1994 compilation Twelve Deadly Cyns…and Then Some. Lauper admitted in an interview with Matthew Rettenmund for his 1996 book Totally Awesome 80s: A Lexicon of the Music, Videos, Movies, TV Shows, Stars, and Trends of that Decadent Decade that she hated the song, which was why she had chosen not to include it on her first compilation.

Steven Spielberg had made Cyndi the musical director for The Goonies soundtrack. She sought out new bands to be included on the project including her friends, The Bangles.

Cyndi refused to play the song live after 1986. She finally incorporated it back into her live show during a 2005 concert in Baltimore, Maryland. Fans kept screaming to hear the song, and she sang it acapella. She has since incorporated the song back into her live set, due to overwhelming fan recognition.

The song peaked at #10 on the US Billboard Hot 100 singles chart. The song did much better in Japan peaking at #1 on the Japanese Oricon International Singles Chart.

Cyndi had the artistic control of the OST, and she co-wrote the song, strange she ended up hating it. I know the song may be a little kiddie/juvenile, but it’s a catchy as hell (Halloween pun intended) tune!
Another thing that surprised me was the lack of surprise in the BB100. #10 is just average for Cyndi for a “new” single when she had her first 4 hits Top 5, 3 of them Top 3, 2 of them Top 2, and 1 of them #1!
Plus it is from A Steve Speilberg smash movie!
Plus Plus Madonna and Huey Lewis and Simple Minds and John Parr and Duran Duran and Lionel Richie and Phil Collins ALL had #1s singles from movies that year.

This mix was included on the Japanese only release “The Best Remixes” which compiles 12″ mixes of girls just want to have fun, she-bop (both remixed by arthur baker) change of heart ( a pettibone mix) what’s going on (also I believe pettibone) and a live version of money changes everything as well as this track. (also mixed by arthur baker). Worth the money to get a hold of.

Reminds me of another “harder” to get song by Cyndi, also from a movie — who remembers that “Hole In My Heart (All The Way To China)” was from her movie Vibes? I’ve got the CD3 (with Boy Blue (Live) as the “b” side) somewhere around here, and I recall it appearing on a 3CD import “greatest” … Thanks for sharing this, DJ Paul!

Great music! In 80 years I tried to get this vinyl.
Dub is fantastic! Certain parts sound like country music.
I LOVE this music (love Cindy).
What can I say? Thanks vm, Paul!

Who could forget that the big two part video she had on MTV to promo the song?

Being a fan of Cyn, I already have this. But, my copy of the Dub Version isn’t so great, quality-wise. I betcha your rip is much better, so thanks in advance for the Dub!

It’s funny how this song was overlooked from so many of her Hits compilations, and that so many people were looking for it. Now, the single version is on 3 or 4 of her newer Hits compilations. I’m glad she is performing the song again…it seems to be quite the crowd pleaser.

And, Silver Blue, I love her “Hole In My Heart (All The Way To China)” as well. I need to put that on my list of 3″ CD Singles to find and buy. I also need to finish working on editing the audio from the extended video. I just need to tweak the audio, to better match the CD quality, so that they segue together nicely and sound smooth.

Paul, I have to jump in here and say “thank you!” once again! I’ve had this song cranked in my headphones the past few days, and I am in awe at how clean the audio quality is on this transfer! It’s flawless. The only sound of a record I hear in the entire song is at the very end when it is fading. Just brilliant!

Cyndi’s right, the song is horrible. I respect her far more for acknowledging that, because I sure hated it at the time. I’d always turn the radio down when the obnoxious, grating thing came on. Like fingernails on a chalkboard. But like I said, it doesn’t diminish my opinion of Cyndi at all since we agree it’s terrible.

Just watched Cyndi Lauper’s She’s So Unusual Concert here in Australia.

She may be in her 60’s but boy, close your eyes, and you’d think you were listening to a CD.

She sang ALL of her songs from the “She’s So Unusual” album and more, including “Goonies”.
