The Communards – Never Can Say Goodbye (US 12″ Promo)

Posted by DjPaulT on June 17th, 2010

BURNING THE GROUND HI-NRG EXCLUSIVE 1987

Side One Promo Label

REQUEST

“Never Can Say Goodbye” is a song written by Clifton Davis and originally recorded by The Jackson 5. Released as a single in 1971, it was one of the group’s most successful songs. The song has been covered numerous times, most notably in 1974 by disco diva Gloria Gaynor and in 1987 by Hi-NRG/dance-pop group The Communards.

In 1987, British pop band The Communards had a hit with a Hi-NRG cover of the Clifton Davis classic, which was featured on their second album, Red.

Scottish lead singer Jimmy Somerville, openly gay on record since his previous band Bronski Beat released “Smalltown Boy” in 1984, performed a falsetto version faithful to Gaynor’s disco take, right down to the pronouns “you know you love him more and more” and “never can say goodbye, boy”.

The Communards’ version reached #4 in the UK Singles Chart and peaked at #2 on the Billboard Hot Dance/Disco chart in the U.S. The group had reached #1 on those charts covering another 1970s classic, “Don’t Leave Me This Way”, in 1986.

The energetic music video of this version is classified as a classic by cable video channel VH1.

The Communards version was also featured in Father’s Day, in the first series of the revived Doctor Who, set in 1987.

This 12″ promo features remixes exclusive to this release.

Thank you so much. It was only a few years ago that I realized that the 7:50 extended version was a fade of this much longer mix. It is genius.

Thanks for this, DJPaulT. Does anyone know if a Digital copy of the 7″ edit to the remix is anywhere out there? It’s an edit of the Shep Pettibone Mix, and runs right around 3:59 in length. I have a bad vinyl transfer made just before my turntable bit the dust.

    Silver Blue,

To my knowledge, the Shep Pettibone single remix does not exist on a digital format; only edits of the album version. I have a good rip of the 7″ and have posted it to RapidShare. I’ve also included the b-side “77 The Great Escape.”

Of course, I meant “unknown to me”. LOL. I was a Freshman in college when this song was the rage in the clubs…. thank you for taking me back to those happy years, both of you!

I noticed some pops in the shared 7″ (e.g. at 2’01). Since it’s not recommended to edit and clean an MP3 I ripped my own 7″. If people are interested I can upload it to Rapidshare together with the European single edit which runs 4’28.

    Sorry about the pops :(

BTW Thanks Paul for sharing this promo. I recently bought this one myself so your post saves me from ripping it myself. I’m sure your rip will beat mine when it comes to cleaning :o )
